I know what you're thinking. These tarnished accessories are garbage. I can't believe I bought them and now I have to throw them away.

Please don't throw your accessories away! Let's try to restore them first. Here's how we do it:

Step 1: Identify the tarnished areas. These are the darker, rusty looking areas of the accessory. With wine charms, this tarnishing may appear on charms, on the wine charm ring, or on metal beads. You have to remember this is actually very normal, and a very common and expected process when metals are combined with other metals, or when exposed to air, water, and other surrounding elements. Don't worry, we're going to fix it soon with this tutorial.

Step 2: Gather your tarnished products and cleaning materials.

You will need:

  • For silver, silver plated and silver tone products, a silver polishing lotion or cleaner. I use Hagerty silver polish in the baby blue bottle. I like this brand because it's affordable, works fast, and lasts long. It cleans and restores your accessories, and it protects them from further tarnishing. You can find this product at hagertyusa.com, Amazon, or your local hardware or retail store.

  • For stainless steel, aluminum, gold tone, and brass tone products, I use Bar Keepers Friend soft cleanser. You may already have this product at home as it is very versatile as a cleaning agent and works incredibly well on so many surfaces. You can find this product at barkeepersfriend.com, Amazon, or your local hardware or retail store.

  • Washable microfiber cloth or soft paper towel to apply the lotion or cleaner to your accessory.

  • A clean microfiber or soft cloth to remove the lotion or cleaner. Read the instructions of your cleaning product to determine if you can use other materials or running water to rinse the cleaner off your accessory.

Step 3: Clean your products in minutes.

  • Without taking apart your accessory, isolate the tarnished area from the rest of the accessory with your fingers as best you can. If there is more than one tarnished area, just address one area at a time.

  • Always follow the instructions of your cleaning product. Generally, we dab a dime size amount of cleaner onto the cleaning cloth, then rub the cleaner onto the tarnished area, gently rubbing the cleaner on the product's surface. We love watching the tarnish stains come off on the cleaning cloth - it happens so fast! Let the cleaner sit on the product surface for a minute.

  • After a minute or so, you can remove the cleaner following the instructions on the cleaner. For Hagerty's and Bar Keepers Friend, we simply wipe the products clean with a clean cloth, and it is then safe to follow with some warm water if there is some residue from the cleaner.

  • Always wipe dry to finish the process and ensure no cleaner or water droplets are left on the product.

That's it! Let us know if this guide worked for you, and as always feel free to reach out with any questions!
